Boracay Island

Boracay Island is part if the goup of islands called Viayas. The province it is part of, is called Aklan. The climate is tropical. Best travel time is between November and end of May. The climate is motly dry in that time. Of course there’s the odd rainshower and due to the climatchange this happens more often now, than in the “good ol’ days”.

From around June the rainy season starts. Taifuns cross the islands ant it can get quite uncomfortable. The langauage is called “Tagalog”. Most Filippinos though speak English. Even little children do. So it’s easy to get around most everywhere.

Talking about getting around. Boracay has an airport. It is not exactly located on the island, but in Caticlan, which is a 15 minutes boat ride away from the island. International flights up until now land in Kalibo. The bus ride from there to Caticlan takes about two hours.

In Boracay itself you can get around by trycicle or even just walk along the beach. The island is small and every place is within reach. The prices of most everything are – compared to the rest of the Philippines, very high.

It can happen, that you buy two scoops of icecream in a restaurant for 350,- Pesos and the waitress that serves it with a smile, will only earn 260,- Pesos for working a whole day.

Some things have changed after reopening Boracay Island had completely been closed for a few months, after President Duterte saw, what a mess had been made out of it. Everybody and his friend, was trying to squeeze out of it as much as possible.
Plenty of hotels, bars and restaurants were not attached to the sewage plant and pumped it all right into the ocean. The very same ocean, that made the island so attractive. Tis very ocean, now swept tons of green sea weed onto the white san beach and swept back all the suage, that had been pumped into it. President Duterte called Boracay a “cesspool”, and he was right. Some folks, that come to Boracay more often, will have noticed, there's an environment fee to be paid before leaving for the island. For so many years, while the environment kept collapsing. Some people as us, “where did all those millions go”? We never could tell.

The closure of Boracay, of course hurt many people. Some actually suffered hunger, businesses collapsed and the crime rate went up immediately. All of Malay, basically lives in one way or the other, of Boracay. There are employees on the airport, suddenly unemployed, because flights are cancelled, the sailmaker can't nit sails any more because the sailboats don't run. The cargo company can't really bring a lot of goods, for there's nobody to consume it.

Things have changed for the good

Things have changed dramatically, since the island's reopening. Many hotels, that were irrisponsible, by letting suage into the ocean, were closed. Many restaurants, that built their service areas right onto the beach, had to take them down. No more flying vendors selling sunglasses and hats, are gone. A lot less people are allowed to come to the island at all. Which is a great decision, for at peak, the white beach seemed like a zoo. It was simply terrible. For sure, had things gone on like that, Boracay Island would have collapsed within months.
Before its closure, the tiny streets were completely jammed with stinkin tricycles. Thetraffic in New York rush-hour, didn't seem worse. The streets are widened ow and clean. Many tricycles as well as other vehicles, are run on electricity now. Before, many Boracay activities – like island hopping, were perfect, to get away from the place, just to get a brake of it.
